The swim takes place in Wahweap Bay of Lake Powell which is presently at an elevation of approximately 3500 ft. The average high temperature for October in the Page/Wahweap area is 82 degrees, with the average low temperature at 47 degrees. The average water temperature is in the upper 60s to low 70s (wetsuits are permitted and recommended).

The course will consist of a single triangle marked with bright yellow tetrahedron buoys at each corner of the course. The race will start in separate waves for Sprint and for Olympic, with a shallow (waist-deep) water start. Sprint distance participants will swim one lap (two laps for Olympic distance), and will exit out of the water and back on to the beach through the timing gate.

Note: The lake is currently at 51% of full capacity, so the waterline is out a bit further out than it would normally be (The map above does not give an accurate representation of the current water level- it is higher than shown in the satellite images, and the swim course will be closer to transition than it appears in the map). Because of the reduced water levels, you will have roughly a 1/4 mile run across sandy beach to the transition area parking lot. The run course distances may be adjusted to compensate for this extra transition distance.

After your swim, you will be treated to a bike course that features a mix of flats and hills for a challenging but forgiving course, starting with the uphills and finishing with fast downhills, sure to make for a competitive race.

The sprint course consists of a single loop following Lakeshore Dr, exiting the park from the South Entrance onto Highway 89, re-entering the park at the North Entrance and returning to the start at approximately 11.6 miles, and the Olympic course is two loops of the same course. Along the course you'll be submersed with the overwhelming view of Lake Powell, the Glen Canyon Dam and Bridge, and red rocks. Be careful to not get too distracted by the beauty and pay attention!

Volunteers, park staff and Highway Patrol will be staffed at all intersections, with Highway Patrol and electronic warning signs present at either side of US-89 to ensure your safety on the highway.

The run course will follow part of the same route as the bike course along Lakeshore Dr, consisting of a simple out-and-back. The turnaround will be at approximately 1.55 miles for the Sprint, and 3.1 miles for the Olympic distance.

The course will be marked clearly with signs and aid stations will be staffed with volunteers along the way to point you in the right direction. Beware of the bike course and vehicle traffic as you run on this road and stay in the shoulders as much as possible.

Athletes will be treated to a beautiful and exciting experience as they run through the park area sure to be filled with spectators, and will finish in the area adjacent to the transition area (where the "FINISH" chute and gate is).

Road/Traffic Restrictions

For the safety of all athletes and spectators, there will be a few traffic restrictions on race day. The southbound lane of Lakeshore Dr. will be closed to vehicle traffic after 8:00 am and vehicular traffic must remain in the northbound lane only. Vehicle traffic will still be permitted in both directions on US-89 but traffic will be slowed and reduced during the event (vehicles will be warned with electronic message boards and highway patrol officers in BOTH directions). Because traffic is permitted, bikers are strongly encouraged to stay in the shoulder of the highway and passing in the lane of vehicle traffic is discouraged. Do so at your own risk, and be sure to watch for vehicles. This restriction will be in place until all of the bicycles have cleared the course, expected to be some time around 11:00 am. If you need to exit the park, please proceed to the north exit of the state park in the northbound lane, and re-enter in the South park entrance.

Spectators

Spectators are encouraged to line up along the run course throughout the Marina area and surrounding finish area if possible, but may also view the bike course on the side of the highway and other parts of the course. Please be aware that after the race starts, although the roads will still be open to traffic, spectators are highly discouraged from travelling on the course as it presents a safety hazard to the racers. Spectators may also watch the swim start on the immediate section of the beach where the race will begin; however, please be observant of the participants and make sure they are unobstructed. Spectators must always stay out of the way of racers to avoid any possible hazard and resulting injury. Please watch, but don't obstruct the race! We encourage athletes to bring their families along for the event. Help us to make this a safe event!
